A recent Institute of Medicine report “Delivering High-Quality Cancer Care: Charting a New Course for a System in Crisis” examines the growing demand for cancer care with an aging population of baby boomers and “increasing complexity of treatment, a shrinking workforce, and rising costs.” Also missing from most delivery systems is coordinated care where patients are fully informed about options, expenses, and outcomes before starting treatment. This video provides the patient point of view, as well efforts to change the delivery system.
A year ago today I had lumpectomy surgery to treat breast cancer. These past months have been arduous, but I’m still alive and kicking, and I’ll be celebrating tonight with a few close friends. I was inspired to start this blog after reading about artist and technologist Salvatore Iaconesi, who after being diagnosed with brain cancer shared his experience and medical records online to find an open source cure and counter the dehumanizing aspects of modern medicine. I too am posting my medical records and images for anyone to view or download that it may further understanding and research. This framework is a start – I’ll continue to develop site and share more about my journey, transforming this experience into something that may help me and others find our Mojo!
